Basic Mathematics:
|
All students entering a college or university are given entrance examinations. I worked for two in prior years. And 85% of the students tested into the Basic Mathematics course whether they had passed High School Calculus or not. It was because the students failed the fraction, proportions, ratio, percents, and decimals part of the exam. Once testing into that course, they not only are required to pass the course by 85% but they also must take the followup course sequence, Pre-Algebra and then Algebra 1.
Taking these courses used up financial aid money and the student may run out of funding before they have a chance to get a degree. It would be wise to build a solid mathematics foundation before taking the entrance examination. Fractions are useful in every day money transactions, cooking, construction, music, art, sewing and many other every day tasks. The following are downloadable free Powerpoints on fractions provided by various teachers.
